The number of people who have resorted to taking weight loss pills in their weight loss efforts is simply amazing- at least going by the revenues reported by the various vendors of these products, which promise you instant weight loss. Now there is nothing wrong with taking a product that will give your weight loss efforts a boost – but the problem is that many people just pop the pills without knowing what it is that they are taking, how it works and what side effects one can expect from it.
A great majority of these weight loss pills work by increasing the body’s rate of metabolism – and thereby burning off the extra fat. Of the various mechanisms employed by the various weight loss aids, this is probably the easiest – hence the huge number of weight loss pills that work through this mechanism. The only major problem with the use of these weight loss pill that increase the body’s rate of metabolism is that there help tends to be short-lived – and you are bound to start putting back the weight once you stop using them. Yet most of them claim that using them will lead to long term weight loss.
Another group of weight loss pills works by stimulating the thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormones – seeing that high levels of this hormone are associated with higher rates of metabolism and therefore lower weights. Conventional wisdom, however, advises against the use of agents that interfere with the hormones, unless one has a clinically recognized problem like hypothyroidism that warrants their use. For people without hypothyroidism, there are certainly better ways to lose weight.
Then there are the weight loss pills that work by suppressing the appetite – seeing that looking at it in the right way, the real problem behind many cases of obesity is overeating – which is in turn caused by having too high an appetite. The approach employed by these weight loss pills goes to the core of the problem – and although they might not yield the instant results many people are looking for, could lead to real sustainable weight loss.
Another group of weight loss pills puts together fat molecules in the stomach and combines them into huge units that are impossible to absorb – and these are referred to as fat binders. These are obviously very potent agents, and while they are certainly very effective at what they do, not much is known about their side effects.
There are also weight loss pills which work by inhibiting the conversion of carbohydrates into glucose, seeing that it is this excess carbohydrates converted into glucose which are in turn converted into fat and stored as reserves in various parts of the body, resulting in one being overweight. And the potential side effect of the weight loss pills that work in this way is that they could lead to long term suppression of that mechanism through which carbohydrates are converted into glucose, that is, long after the weight loss goal has been achieved, leading to problems down the line.
